Comments: Souter was born in Scotland, studied art in London and spent five years in Natal before settling in Sydney in 1886 where he became famous as an illustrator and particularly for his dramatic black and white, art nouveau drawings which often included women with cats. His landscapes from the 1890s also show him to be a talented and sensitive impressionist artist.
