Literature:

For a biographical essay on the artist see 'James Howe Carse’, by Stephen Scheding, in 'Art and Australia', vol. 17, no. 1, 1979, p.9.

In 1885 Carse closed up his Sydney studio at 7 Bridge Street and travelled with his artist friend George Podmore to Hobart, arriving on 20 December.[i] The two artists returned together to Sydney on the ship Esk in January 1886. This painting would have been painted from sketches when Carse was back in Sydney. Tasmanian subjects by Carse are extremely rare.
